Education Session Inside Burma about COVID-19
Hello,
I’m writing this from home where I have been staying for what seems like ages. We are allowed to go out for walks and I take full advantage of this. Here in the Seattle area where I now live the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths continues to climb. But this is a worldwide problem, There are cases on the Navajo reservation in the Southwest US and in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, which is a 4-hour bus ride from Sangklaburi, where our office is located. Thailand as a country has more than 1,500 confirmed cases as of today. (NY Times)
I spoke with Saikamar, our project leader there, and she said that the border between Thailand and Burma where our team normally crosses is closed. There are cases inside Burma but it is difficult to get numbers and testing is generally unavailable. Since early February our team has been giving talks about COVID-19 in all the villages where we work. They also downloaded posters from the WHO website, translated them into Mon, and distributed them widely. With this early start in educating the people, we are hopeful that they can remain safe.
At this time, I am not going to ask for your (financial) support. For now it is better that you give that support locally, to help people in need in your own communities.
We truly are “all in this together.” Be safe. Stay well.
